Estoril Sol Launches Portugal’s First Licensed Online Casino Site

On Monday, Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ), local gaming regulator, announced that it had issued an online casino license to Estoril Sol to operate using the estorilsolcasinos.pt domain.

This is the first online casino license issued by Portugal under its new regulated online gambling market.

Estoril Sol operates three land-based casinos; Casino Estoril, Casino da Povoa, and Casino Lisbon, which in 2015 reported revenue of €182 million, which is more than two thirds of the total casino market value. Estoril’s chairman is Stanley Ho; Macau casino icon, who founded the SJM Holdings casino business.

Estoril’s new website, which has already gone live, is licensed to offer slots, roulette and blackjack. Its online platform is powered by Gaming1, a Brussels-based provider.

Following the May launching of French operator Betclic Everest’s sports betting site Betclic.pt, which was also followed earlier this month by Malta-based Bet Entertainment Technologies Ltd’s online sportsbook, Estoril’s online launch brings Portugal’s tally of licensed online operators to three.

Although Estoril may be considered a ‘latecomer’ to the party, it may in fact be the first to post an online profit. Casino sites are taxed at 15% of gross gaming revenue, while sports betting websites have to pay 8% tax on betting turnover; an already prohibitive rate which, once turnover tops €30 million, increases incrementally.

Brick-and-mortar casino operator Solverde, and state lottery operator Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa are among other operators which have expressed a form of interest in launching online casino sites. Due to the government’s delays in seeking European Commission approval for liquidity sharing with other EU member states, however, Portugal, may not welcome its first licensed online poker operator until November at the earliest.

William Hill –England v Wales Betting Expects £35m Turnover

Due to an unfortunate late goal, England’s Euro 2016 might not have started as well as planned, but Wales enjoyed the exact kind of start that they had been hoping for.

In a game that is expected to attract around £35million worth of turnover for the betting industry, William Hill, a bookmaker based in the United Kingdom, has priced England at 4/7 to defeat Wales.

Joe Crilly, William Hill Spokesman, said: “£35million worth of turnover would far surpass the total takings on any match this season. Despite England being clear favourites to win this match we expect anything but a rarebit of Welsh cash as they back their boys to beat the old enemy.”

Russia’s late goal against England sparked a £5million swing for William Hill, as well as projected a £25million swing for the industry.

Crilly went on to say: “An England defeat would have been around a £3m loser for us yet ended up as a £2m winner. England’s failure to defeat Russia was perhaps the best result we have seen after the favourites have largely done the business for our punters.”

Italy’s ADM to Issue More eSports Licenses

It has today been announced that Italy’s online gaming and betting regulator, Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM), is set to issue further eSports licenses in order to channel the vertical to the regulated betting operators working in the country.

This move follows the continuous increase in popularity that eSports is gaining, with betting operators attempting to attract potential eSports bettors to their websites in a bid to cross-sell them into their ‘traditional’ sports betting offerings.

The first batch of new eSports licenses will cover the ‘DOTA 2’ and ‘League of Legends’ franchises, and will be regulated under the betting decree of July 2013 on sports and other events as identified by the licensees and verified by the ADM.

Valerie Peano, partner at the Rome-based law firm EGLA, said that the 2013 decree placed “limitations on the types of bets that could be placed: the nature of the bets must not include any sort of violent, indecent or discriminating offer. Therefore, eSports instigating violent behaviours and/or any kind of discrimination will not be accepted”.

Licensed operators will list the eSports events that they will be offering markets on, and the ADM will add the events in the betting schedule along with the real-time results through the national central system.

“As a general rule, licensees shall submit a technical report to detail (i) the eSport event/s, (ii) the bet/s to be included within said customised betting program and (iii) the results certification modalities of the event through two different sources of information, one official (e.g. federations) as well as (iv) the licensee’s system description for relevant data registration and storage,” added Peano.

Licensees will also have to offer solutions to facilitate access to information by the regulator, particularly to live events, so that it can carry out monitoring and inspection activities. ADM will also maintain authority over betting integrity issues as well as the risks associated with irregular betting patterns.

NYX Gaming Finalises Deal for £270m OpenBet Acquisition

NYX Gaming, a leading digital gaming supplier, has completed the acquisition of rival sports betting platform provider OpenBet.

On Monday, the Toronto-listed company issued a market update which confirmed that the £270million co-funded deal has been finalised, more than a month after it was originally announced.

On April 4th, NYX Gaming announced that it is acquiring 100% of OpenBet’s assets from private equity Vitruvian Partners. The online technology company received a contribution of £80million from William Hill, a UK betting operator, and an additional £20million from Sky Betting & Gaming.

The acquisition will have NYX Gaming repay OpenBet’s outstanding £95million corporate debt.

In exchange, NYX Gaming will get over 2,000 desktop and mobile game titles on the OpenBet platform, and a combined workforce of 1,100 staff based in 14 countries across Europe, North America, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

Matt Davey, CEO of NYX Gaming, said that acquiring OpenBet marked the “next phase of the company’s growth,” enabling the firm to service “exciting player-driven solutions across all verticals and channels.”

Davey said “We now turn our focus to planning and executing the strategy to leverage the collective strengths and benefits of scale that the combined business brings to our customers and shareholders.”

Further good news for NYX Gaming was the successful acquisition of OpenBet which saw its revenue almost double in 2015 following a year packed with new client deals and acquisitions.

Revenue for 2015 was up 92% to $53.3million and gross profits gained 86% to $44.8million, but NYX Gaming also recorded a net loss of $8.4million partly due to the troubled Ongame online poker product, which was worse than the loss of $7million in 2014.

In an earlier interview, Davey said that the company hopes to convince Amaya, who sold Ongame in 2014, to switch its BetStars sports betting product to the OpenBet platform. The executive admitted that there is no guarantee that Amaya will abandon its existing sports platform, but with OpenBet powering a host of the UK market’s biggest bookies, “you would have to imagine [Amaya] would consider our product favourably.”
