NBA seeks partnership with U.K PlayOn, rebuffing U.S providers

The biggest basketball association in the world, The NBA has signed a partnership with U.K provider DFS service PlayOn instead of U.S based providers FanDuel and DraftKings.

In the Latin American, Asian and European markets PlayOn will now become the daily fantasy provider of NBA. Despite an existing deal and a stake in U.S provider FanDuel.

NBA President of Global Partnerships Salvatore LaRocca stated today: “Our partnership with PlayOn provides us an opportunity to deepen our engagement with our international audience, and bring these fans closer to the game.”

It envisaged that the partnership will allow the NBA to develop its growing global popularity and allow it to push DFS into markets with clearer regulatory structures than the US, where a state specific approach to regulation is adhered to.

Killian Jones, founder and CEO of PlayOn stated “Our approach to regulation is resonating well with sporting organisations. We are only going to operate where the regulatory framework is well established and very clear,” he said. “There is no question or ambiguity around regulation or licensing – which puts people at ease.”

PlayOn currently provides DFS contests in over 100 countries however only accepts real money wagers from the UK, Ireland and Australia, where the licence permits.

Jones added: “The NBA’s global reach and daily fixture schedule make it an ideal fit for daily fantasy. We look forward to working closely with the NBA to deliver innovative sports entertainment experiences to basketball fans around the world.”

Starting with the 2017 NBA playoffs, DFS contests will be available to NBA fans in markets such as Germany, UK, Italy, France and Spain in Europe; Brazil, Mexico and Argentina; and Australia, Japan and the Philippines in Asia.

The preferences and style of each contest will be specifically accommodated to the language and culture of that region.
