SiGMA catches up with Rinat Shamir from IbexNetwork
SiGMA talks to Rinat Shamir, Senior Affiliate Manager at IbexNetwork. We discussed her career, and the question of how the iGaming industry can be more inclusive for women.
What made you decide to go into iGaming? What was it that drew you to it?
iGaming is a vibrant and colorful industry that provides people with something that we all need, a break. I joined the industry because I wanted to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, but most importantly, I wanted to bring the great forms of entertainment to people’s everyday life, which is what I do every day at IbexNetwork.
What are the challenges of being a woman in the iGaming?
I think the challenge is working in the industry that’s mainly dominated by males. However, most industries throughout history have been dominated by males and women have always risen to the occasion. Being a minority in this field has made me a stronger employee as it always pushes me to work harder. I think it’s important to remember that at the end of the day it’s not about being a woman or a man, but about delivering results.
Do you consider the iGaming industry as diverse or do you think we need to bring more women to the industry?
I definitely don’t think our industry is diverse enough. Whenever I visit conventions I see mostly men. It would be nice to see more confident women that are not hostesses or models. What I love about working in IbexNetwork, is the fact that we do put an emphasis on hiring more women. I think our diversity makes us a stronger, better company. As a whole, iGaming is a “man’s world” but we all know it would be nothing without women.
What are some of the barriers, that you’ve noticed, keeping girls and women from iGaming industry jobs?
I’m not sure that there are actual barriers. I think the iGaming industry is open to embracing more women but at the same time, it is very cut throat and demands a certain work environment that may not be suitable for everyone. It depends on the position and personal traits of character.
What advice would you give to women looking into a possibility of starting a career in gaming?
Being a woman doesn’t have to define you. You are smart, strong, confident, and hardworking first and you also happen to be a woman. Don’t be afraid to try, be open-minded, believe in your abilities and the rest will come. Most importantly, be you.
